Thullen Research Lab – Talented IP Program & Open Research Opportunities
At Thullen Research Lab, we are committed to fostering innovation, empowering students and researchers, and supporting the development and promotion of original ideas and projects. Our Intellectual Property (IP) Program and Open Research Opportunities initiative are designed to help participants build their academic and professional portfolios while protecting and amplifying the impact of their work.
IP Program Overview
1. Empowering Innovation:
The lab encourages students and researchers to develop impactful projects and build strong academic portfolios. We are committed to supporting and promoting their work, with the goal of enabling them to benefit from their intellectual property—whether through publication, professional development, or future commercialization.
2. Inclusive Participation:
Thullen Research Lab welcomes all projects to join the IP Program—whether supervised by Dr. Thullen or independently initiated. Students and researchers from any discipline are invited to participate in our open research and innovation ecosystem.
Benefits of Joining Thullen Research Lab IP Program:
1. IP Protection
Intellectual property created by students or researchers will be protected under Thullen Research Lab. The lab ensures the formal recognition of IP ownership, which is granted as a lifetime asset to its contributors.
2. Academic Benefit
Participation in the IP program supports students’ and researchers’ academic and professional growth through:
• Paper Publication – Research papers and project documentation may be published on the Thullen Research Lab website and other academic platforms.
• Academic Portfolio & References – All projects can be included in academic portfolios and used as formal references for graduate school, job applications, or future research.
3. IP Commercialization & Revenue Sharing
Thullen Research Lab is committed to helping students and researchers bring their innovations to market through:
• Project Promotion – Projects will be promoted through Thullen Research Lab’s official platforms, including LinkedIn and other media channels, increasing visibility and audience engagement.
• Revenue Sharing Model – Projects developed under Thullen Research Lab will grant students or researchers 70% IP ownership. This ownership is permanent, and participants may benefit from future commercialization efforts through the lab’s IP commercialization initiatives.

Open Research Assistant – Job Description
Position: Open Research Assistant (Volunteer-based, IP building)
Eligibility: Undergraduate and Graduate Students interested in independent or collaborative research
Research Areas: Data Science, NLP, AI, Data Visualization, and other emerging technologies
Description:
- Work on your own research topic or collaborate with ongoing projects
- Develop proposals and prototypes for publication or lab contribution
- Gain experience in academic writing, model building, and data analysis
- Opportunity to submit to conferences or journals under the lab's guidance

Compensation: Volunteer-based. However, students with strong performance and demonstrated initiative may be considered for future paid RA positions when funding becomes available.

Research Assistant (Paid) – Job Description
Position: Research Assistant (Paid)
Eligibility: Graduate Students in fields related to Data Science or Natural Language Processing (NLP)
Research Areas: Data Science, Machine Learning, NLP, AI, and related disciplines
Responsibilities:
- Support ongoing research projects and Real World Projects.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with data collection and cleaning, Data Analysis
- Build and evaluate machine learning models
- Document and present Project findings

Skills Preferred: Python, R, SQL, data visualization tools, familiarity with machine learning frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Hugging Face)

Key Responsibilities:

Thullen Lab is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Project Assistant to support the planning and execution of Data Science (DS) and Information Technology (IT) projects. This position is ideal for graduate students looking to gain hands-on experience in project coordination, stakeholder communication, and agile project development within a nonprofit research and consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the day-to-day coordination and tracking of ongoing DS and IT projects.
- Collaborate with project leads, developers, and researchers to ensure project timelines and deliverables are met.
- Support documentation, meeting minutes, and progress reporting.
- Help organize team meetings and facilitate communication among stakeholders.
- Contribute to proposal writing and resource planning for new projects.
- Monitor project risks, issues, and dependencies.
- Assist in transitioning volunteer efforts into project-based roles with partial funding (10%–20%).
Qualifications:

Marketing Assistant – Job Description
Position: Marketing Assistant
Eligibility: Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist in identifying and connecting with potential partners or clients who need Data Science or IT solutions
- Actively seek out funding opportunities through outreach to small businesses, individuals, and organizations
- Help build a project pipeline by promoting lab services and showcasing past successful projects
- Collaborate with lab directors and research leads to prepare marketing material for prospective sponsors or clients
- Support grant search, proposal drafting, and sponsorship outreach
Preferred Skills: Communication, outreach, networking, sales or fundraising interest, basic understanding of data science or IT is a plus
